With magic, things can get sealed a lot harder and more thoroughly than science can. With science, you got shit like heat sealin', chemicals burnin' things closed, airtight lids, valves, whatever.
But magic? Magic can seal stuff up like it weren't open to begin with. Not just fixin' it closed, but it could go as far as reversin' it closed.

With what the power holders are doin', they're openin' stuff up temporarily to grab people out of their worlds, but those holes have to be closin' right back up after they get someone through it.
