"Okay! So we were on our journey, and we heard this horrible, horrible sound like a lot of people screaming all at once? And Wukong went to go find out what was going on, and found all these Buddhist monks enslaved by Taoists. This was the Slow Cart Kingdom - a long time ago, there was a terrible drought, and no amount of Buddhist prayer would help, but three Taoist sages called the Three Immortals came and summoned the rain. And after that all Buddhist monks were enslaved while Taoists were venerated, and any Buddhist monk who came to the city would be enslaved too, which would be bad for me?
"So Wukong rescued all the monks, and they helped us get into the city!" Also Wukong killed some Taoists to do said rescuing but she's skipping all of that part. "When we went to the king to get my travel papers recertified, the Three Immortals came and demanded he arrest me and also everyone else for causing trouble in the temple the previous night? -I asked Wukong later if he had caused any trouble, and he said that he had, and it was really funny but kind of gross so I probably didn't actually want to hear about it. You should ask him yourself sometime. Anyway, at the time he denied everything.
"So a messenger arrived asking for help with a drought in a nearby town, and the king decided that it should be a competition, and whoever called the rain was in the right. So we went out there and the Immortal of Tiger Power declared that he would strike his ritual tablet five times and summon the winds, clouds, lightning, and rain, and then dismiss the storm. But Wukong secretly cloned himself and zipped up into the clouds to intercept all the weather gods that the Immortal summoned, so the weather didn't change at all."
This is the point at which Sanzang pauses for breath. This is actually kind of a long story now that she thinks about it.
