A far, far wider area is freed from the clinging Darkness, with the shadows feathering out into the sky where the gust tore through them, and the earth in the centre is split in two.]

That's soil. The ground's still there underneath the sand.
[That may mean that only everything overground was turned to sand - still terrible, but as long as there's soil (and, hopefully, water), there's a possibility of regrowth. He has no idea of how to clear away all the sand in an effective manner or whether the original plants, animals, etc. could potentially be restored through magic, but at least there's a shimmer of hope here!]
