Cole made a point to not look Macaque in the eye when he made the request, mostly to not see his reaction. He was feeling raw and helpless, on the back foot, and just not able to deal with that. He understood where Macaque was coming from and it just made him feel worse. So focusing on where he could maybe help was an easy pivot.
