For Wash, it was long ago, a scar finally healed. For Maine, it's his present. He knows there are problems with the Project. He's not stupid. He knows that some of the orders he obeys are unlawful under the UNSC. He carries them out anyway, because he believes that's what it'll take to win the war.

The SPARTAN Program may be the magic bullet. But there's no way the war was one by a single man, solo. Not even Master Chief.

So for Maine, Project Freelancer is not a scar. It's not even an open wound. It's just something a little off. Something a little dangerous.

And maybe there's something fucked up in Maine's head, too many years in high-adrenaline situations having switched something in his brain. But what can he say? He likes danger.

Wash steps away to check the food. Maine scrolls through a few more of the photos, smiling when he hits ones where Wash looks particularly silly. He makes sure that when Wash returns, the screen shows one of the silliest.
