Someone that has never handled pokémon, outside of perhaps their parents or older siblings having one around the house as more of a 'companion', are far better off starting with something known to do alright with, ah... Growing pains, as it were.
Such as the pokémon's care.
[Oh dear.
He couldn't be terribly surprised, given what Hijikata had seen of his own pokémon and the clear interest in learning more. Hm, maybe he and Turo needed to push that side app project they were working on further ahead and get it out soon.]
You shouldn't rush yourself, as that could put an unhealthy strain on your partner here. Trying to push them too quickly can also lead to a sort of resentment, and is one way people have mistreated pokémon fairly often- Still, it can train with you to an extent, and they do grow stronger through battling other pokémon. There are certain foods that can do that, but they don't exist here as far as I know.
[Yet.]
A well cared for pokémon will grow strong, as will their bond with you- it may even become something unbreakable. It will also follow with their evolution at certain levels of strength.
