Like I said, it's hard to explain. What draws any two people together? It's just something they find in each other. They can list the qualities they like about the other, interests or history they share, but none of that is the reason they're drawn to one another. It's--

[ He considers it further and takes another stab at it. ]

Like with the shadows, or any new magic that has to be acquired as a skill. When you're first trying to call and master them, you must awaken to their metaphorical language, if you get my meaning. Learn them. Feel them in a way unlike anything in the physical world. Tactile in a way your mind isn't used to. It's a whisper at first. If you listen too hard, it vanishes, makes you wonder whether it was truly there at all. Try to force it, and everything falls apart. You can't grab hold of it or point to it. Some people can't get beyond this point.

But as you awaken to their subtle song, you start to understand it. Feel it. It becomes not only a whisper, but a call. Then, you start to be able to answer. And by then you just know it, it's like a part of you, impossible to deny. Like it's always been part of you, even though it's as intangible and defiant of description as it ever was.

Emotional bonds can be like that. Nothing but a jumble of half-heard whispers, until one day it's everything.

My trouble is that I can't afford to lose my everything all over again, so I make sure there's no everything to ruin. It's not an accident.
