[For a good while, everything Hijikata learned about titans made him hate them more. When he experienced Eren's memory, he was practically yelling along with Eren's younger self, burning with white-hot fury. It took a lot more knowledge for him to reach a point of something like... well, "acceptance" would be too much said, but he can handle the matter more calmly now.
At Eren's response, he can't suppress a snort. He'll just say the damndest things! It makes sense, though. Out of all the people Hijikata ever loved, things only worked out with those who were also combatants. Much as he struggled emotionally, he could never allow himself to be happy with an innocent civilian. He returns Eren's hand squeeze, then gently lets go of him.]
I suppose I should be happy for that.
[Now they got thoroughly sidetracked from Eren's candles... but maybe that's a good thing. Reminiscence is important, and it can be healing in its own way, but it's hard for Hijikata to see Eren sad for long.]
