If he hadn't been there, they may have all died instead. And yet, looking back, now that he doesn't have to fight, doesn't have to make decisions or worry about things weighing him down, he can't help but wonder if they could have arrived at a different outcome somehow. He may not regret it exactly, but he's certainly thought about it plenty, always arriving to the same conclusion. He's not sure if that makes him feel better or worse. ]
