It's a strange concept that he can't seem to really wrap his mind around, because the permanence of death is what had driven so much pain and heartache in their world. Of course, many would say there are worse things than death, that the titan shifters could argue that the titan shifters came close often to cheating death as they can heal what would otherwise be mortal wounds on any normal person. But death had driven so much of why and what he did. To have that simply not matter is...difficult to comprehend.
